I inherited my grandfather’s house — but then my mom told me a secret that changed everything.

My name is Kayla, and I’m twenty years old. For most of my life, I believed a simple story about my past. My father left the moment I was born, and my mother didn’t stay either. They separated shortly after I arrived and eventually built new lives and families of their own. According to what I had always been told, neither of them wanted the responsibility of raising me.

Instead, my grandfather stepped in. My grandparents adopted me, and when my grandmother passed away while I was still young, it became just the two of us. Grandpa became everything to me. He packed my lunches, showed up to my school events, and made sure I always felt cared for. To me, he was the most reliable person in my life.

When he passed away, I felt as if I had lost the last member of my family. In his will, he left me his house and his savings. I thought that would be the end of things. Instead, it triggered something I never expected. Suddenly, my phone filled with angry messages from step-siblings I barely knew, demanding that I share the inheritance.

Then my mother contacted me, and her message changed everything. She didn’t ask for money. Instead, she told me that the story I had believed all my life wasn’t the whole truth. According to her, my parents didn’t abandon me willingly. She claimed my grandfather convinced them to let him care for me temporarily because they weren’t financially stable.

She said that later she tried to get me back but that my grandfather refused and fought in court to keep custody. Hearing this completely shook my understanding of my childhood.

Now I feel caught between two versions of the past. The man who raised me might not have told me everything, but the parents who say they wanted me were never there. The truth seems to lie somewhere between their stories, and I still don’t know who to believe.
