Unplug Appliance at Night

The smell came first—sharp, strange, and out of place in a quiet kitchen. Moments earlier, everything felt normal. Then I noticed a plug growing warm and slightly warped. The source was my air fryer, an appliance I used almost daily without a second thought. That moment changed how I think about kitchen safety.

Like many people, I trusted my appliances to simply work. But that night made me realize how easily routine can hide risk. Kitchens are full of powerful devices, and even familiar ones deserve caution—especially before bed.

Air fryers, though convenient, draw significant power even when not in use. Heat, grease, and wear can affect cords and internal parts over time. Problems often develop silently, until a smell or warmth finally signals danger.

Fire safety experts often warn that small appliances can pose risks if left plugged in. This isn’t about fear—it’s about awareness. Many people discover issues only after a close call, just as I did.

After that night, I learned I wasn’t alone. Others reported warm cords, faint smoke, or odd smells from appliances that weren’t actively running. These stories made it clear that simple habits can prevent serious outcomes.

Unplugging appliances at night is one of the easiest safety steps you can take. It cuts power completely, removing the chance of overheating or electrical faults while you sleep. For older adults especially, this small habit adds peace of mind.

This applies to more than air fryers. Toasters, kettles, and coffee makers all deserve the same attention. Keeping cords clean, checking for damage, and wiping away grease also help reduce risk.

That experience didn’t make me fearful—it made me mindful. I still use my air fryer often, but now I unplug it every night. It’s a small habit that brings real comfort, reminding me that simple precautions can make home feel safer.
